Dear Dr. Sandra Yene Amougui,

I recently discussed natural contraception with some friends. Some mentioned different methods, such as cycle tracking, vaginal douching with Coca-Cola, or even consuming alcohol after sex. We're unsure which methods are truly safe. Could you tell us more about them?

Dear Claudette,

Thank you very much for your question! Natural contraception methods have existed for centuries, but their effectiveness is often very limited. I'll give you an overview of the different methods and explain how reliable they really are.

A Brief History of Contraception: From Ancient Methods to Modern Myths

The search for effective contraception has been a part of human history for millennia. Before the invention of condoms and the pill, people around the world used various methods – often with questionable success. In Africa, including Cameroon, ancient techniques to prevent pregnancy were passed down through generations.

  1. Ancient Contraceptive Methods

Since antiquity, men and women sought ways to avoid pregnancy. Some of these methods, practiced in Cameroon, include:

  • Herbal mixtures: Women consumed or applied extracts from plants and herbal mixtures to prevent pregnancy. Plants like neem or aloe vera were used in hopes of reducing fertility. However, these techniques were mostly unreliable, and there is little scientific evidence of their effectiveness.

  • Mechanical barriers: Before the 17th century, primitive condoms were made from materials like animal intestines or fish bladders. These methods provided minimal protection but represented early attempts at avoiding pregnancy.

  • Withdrawal method (Coitus interruptus): The withdrawal method, where the penis is pulled out of the vagina before ejaculation, was widely practiced despite its high failure rate. Its Pearl Index is around 22, meaning that out of 100 women using this method for a year, 22 would still become pregnant.

  1. Modern Contraceptive Methods: The Pill and the Condom

The invention of latex condoms in the 19th century and the contraceptive pill in the 1960s revolutionized contraception.

  • Condoms: Today, condoms are one of the most widely used and accessible methods. They offer protection against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, with a Pearl Index between 2 and 12, depending on correct usage.

  • The Pill: The pill introduced a reliable hormonal method. Its Pearl Index is between 0.1 and 0.9, making it one of the safest contraceptive methods.

  1. Modern Myths: Alcohol and Coca-Cola

In many regions, including Cameroon, persistent myths exist around supposed contraceptive methods. Some of these myths include:

  • Coca-Cola douches: A widespread but completely false belief is that rinsing the vagina with Coca-Cola after sex could prevent pregnancy. Coca-Cola has no contraceptive properties and could even lead to infections.

  • Alcohol: Some believe that consuming alcohol after sex can prevent fertilization. This is also a myth, as alcohol has no effect on contraception. Drinking a moderate amount of alcohol (like a glass of wine) has no impact on sperm or the fertilization process.

  1. Cycle Tracking (Natural Family Planning)

Cycle tracking involves monitoring the menstrual cycle to identify fertile and infertile days. While this method can be effective, it requires strict discipline and accurate application. Its Pearl Index ranges from 4 to 23, making it riskier than modern methods.

In summary, contraception has evolved significantly throughout history. Modern methods like condoms and the pill offer much greater safety compared to older techniques. Myths like Coca-Cola douches or alcohol after sex are ineffective and should not be relied upon.

To conclude, it's essential to be well-informed about contraceptive methods before making a choice. Whether for health reasons, comfort, or personal beliefs, each method has its advantages and limitations. Don't hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for advice tailored to your needs and situation.

Best regards,

Dr. Sandra Yene Amougui
