Hypermenorrhea is a menstrual disorder in which a woman has excessive menstrual bleeding (80 ml/menstrual cycle). This is often linked to hormonal imbalances, blood clotting disorders, or underlying health conditions.
In this article, we will look at the causes, diagnosis and treatment of hypermenorrhea.
There are several causes of hypermenorrhea
Causes of hypermenorrhea include structural abnormalities of the uterus, such as uterine fibroids, polyps and endometriosis. Hormonal imbalances, such as high levels of estrogen or progesterone, can also be the cause. In addition, blood clotting disorders, such as thrombocytopenia, can cause hypermenorrhea.
Diagnosis includes pelvic ultrasound
The diagnosis of hypermenorrhea can be made by a gynecologist by performing a clinical examination, pelvic ultrasound and blood tests to assess hormone levels and sometimes blood clotting.
A hormonal IUD can decrease bleeding
Treatment for hypermenorrhea may include medications to regulate hormone and blood clotting levels, such as hormonal contraceptives and medications to increase blood clotting. For some patients, it is enough to prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antifibinolytics (drugs that reduce the rate of dissolution of the blood clot). To some of my patients, who suffer from hypermenorrhea, I advise the insertion of a hormonal IUD. Among other things, it thins the lining of the endometrium, which often reduces bleeding. If surgery is needed, it may be performed to remove structural abnormalities from the uterus.
Ask your gynecologist for advice if you have hypermenorrhea
